Structural Therapy is a form of advanced bodywork that focuses on getting the client “unstuck”. Chronic discomfort, inhibited movement and postural problems may arise as a result of several different reasons. Accidents, adaptive movement around injuries, work related postures and the simple process of aging can all cause changes and/or limitations in movement. This happens as a result of adhesions forming in the connective tissue (fascia) which exists as a wrapping around each muscle, bone and body cavity as well as a sheath under the skin. It can be compared to getting a “wad of chewing gum” stuck between layers. This alters the structural balance of the body and the mechanics of movement. Over time these adhesions harden which restricts range of motion and can cause discomfort and pain. That is the bad news. The good news is that this can be changed by therapy.
Structural Therapy is based on the pioneering work of Ida Rolf and is designed to systematically work in the connective tissue to literally “melt” the adhesions. This allows the body to once again find balance, a freeness of movement and a reduction of pain or discomfort that the client has been seeking. This work is deeper than massage and is an active/cooperative process where the client and practitioner work as a team. It is appropriate for all ages and can be adapted for infants, seniors and all those in-between who are experiencing very real limitations. An increased sense of vitality, more balance and a greater feeling of ease and mobility are usually reported by those who have experienced Structural Therapy.
I had an accident at work where a fork lift ran over my legs. I had a lot of surgery to fix the damage, but ended up with my left leg being two inches shorter than the right one. My doctor said that it would be a permanent condition. I had to start wearing a two inch lift on my left shoe, but I fell over a lot because it was hard to walk. I went for my first appointment with Curtis and he measured my legs and found out that they should be the same length even though they weren’t. He said he thought the accident had jammed my left leg into my abdominal area and that it was stuck. He told me it didn’t need to stay that way. He said he couldn’t promise how much it would improve, but he knew he could make it better. Using Structural Therapy he worked on me for one hour and when we finished that first appointment my legs were the same length again. Let’s just say that I was surprised and very happy. I went back for some more appointments and those helped to stabilize the improvement. My leg and back pain got better too and I stopped falling over. He showed me some stretches that help me to maintain the work we had done. Doing this work with Curtis helped me get back to doing things I thought I could never get to do again - like ride my Harley. Rick G. - client for one year
